James Cameron’s “Avatar” Extended Trailer

James Cameron ’s first feature film since 1997’s “Titanic” gives every appearance of being worth the wait.  This new extended trailer shows off the stunning visuals and excellent CGI work that have gone into the film, scheduled for release December 18th.   The visuals and action may well overshadow the cast, which includes some excellent actors.

Starring as former Marine Jake Sully is Sam Worthington .  Last seen as Marcus Wright in Terminator: Salvation alongside Christian Bale, Worthington will also be starring as Perseus in the upcoming Clash of the Titans remake.  Zoe Saldana , Nyota Uhura in Star Trek , is Neytiri, a female warrior and Jake Sully’s love interest.  Excellent stage actor Stephen Lang , who appeared alongside Johnny Depp and Christian Bale in Michael Mann’s Public Enemies , is Colonel Quaritch, and Sigourney Weaver is Dr. Grace Augustine.

This will, undoubtedly, stand alongside the Terminator films and Titanic as another James Cameron masterpiece.

Variety has announced that  Christian Bale will join Mark Wahlberg and director David O. Russell in The Fighter.  The film, to be financed by Relativity Media and distributed by Paramount Pictures is expected to begin production in July.

Pic tells the story of Boston fighter “Irish” Mickey Ward and how he was helped to the world lightweight championship by half-brother Dicky Eklund. Eklund once decked Sugar Ray Leonard and went the distance against the boxing legend before forfeiting his career to drugs and crime. He redeemed himself by training Ward through his Rocky-like run to the title.

Wahlberg, who is said to have been training for the film and to be in fighting shape will play Ward, with Bale taking on the role of his half-brother, Eklund.

Russell Crowe as Robin Hood

robin hood russell crowe

USA Today gives us our first look at Russell Crowe as Robin Hood, Ridley Scott’s upcoming version of the notorious outlaw of Sherwood Forest.  There’s been a lot of negative press surrounding this movie, but now that the cast has been straightened out and filming has begun, everything seems to be fine.

Official Plot Synopsis: Crowe stars as the legendary figure known by generations as Robin Hood, whose exploits have endured in popular mythology and ignited the imagination of those who share his spirit of adventure and righteousness. In 13th century England, Robin and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power. And whether thief or hero, one man from humble beginnings will become an eternal symbol of freedom for his people.

The untitled Robin Hood adventure chronicles the life of an expert archer, previously interested only in self-preservation, from his service in King Richard’s army against the French. Upon Richard’s death, Robin travels to Nottingham, a town suffering from the corruption of a despotic sheriff and crippling taxation, where he falls for the spirited widow Lady Marion (Blanchett), a woman skeptical of the identity and motivations of this crusader from the forest. Hoping to earn the hand of Maid Marion and salvage the village, Robin assembles a gang whose lethal mercenary skills are matched only by its appetite for life. Together, they begin preying on the indulgent upper class to correct injustices under the sheriff.

With their country weakened from decades of war, embattled from the ineffective rule of the new king and vulnerable to insurgencies from within and threats from afar, Robin and his men heed a call to ever greater adventure. This unlikeliest of heroes and his allies set off to protect their country from slipping into bloody civil war and return glory to England once more.

The cast is certainly stellar.  In addition to Crowe, the movie will feature Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian, Vanessa Redgrave as Queen Eleanor of Acquitaine, Mark Strong as Sir Godfrey, Oscar Issac as King John, Lea Seydoux as Princess Isabella, William Hurt as William Marshall, Scott Grimes as Will Scarlet, Kevin Durand as Little John, and Alan Doyle as Alan Adayle.

Channing Tatum as Captain America?

Channing Tatum - Celebrity Interview - Main Image

MTV Splash Page reports that G.I. Joe star Channing Tatum was apparently interested in portraying Captain America in the upcoming Avengers film.  That is, until he found out Will Smith might be up for it.

“I would love to talk about it… When I’d heard that Will Smith was [interested], I’m just like, ‘God, yeah. That’s who should play it… It would be a different Captain America than we all know in the comic, but it’s perfect.”

Both Smith and Matthew McConaughey had been rumored for the part on fan message boards, but apparently no actor has yet been approached to play the superhero in the film, to be directed by Joe Johnston (Jurassic Park III, Hidalgo), and written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (Narnia).

Lucasfilm Casts Red Tails

The cast for Red Tails has been announced by Lucasfilm .  The film, which will be directed by Anthony Hemingway and executive-produced by George Lucas, is about young pilots who overcame institutional racism to become the first African-American fighter pilots in U.S. military history–the Tuskegee Airmen.

According to Variety , the cast will include Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Nate Parker, David Oyelowo, Method Man, Tristan Wilds, Ne-Yo, Elijah Kelley, Andre Royo, Lee Tergeson, and Jesse Williams.

 Here’s the synopsis:

1944. World War II rages and the fate of the free world hangs in the balance. Meanwhile the black pilots of the experimental Tuskegee training program are courageously waging two wars at once — one against enemies overseas, and the other against discrimination within the military and back home. Racial prejudices have long held ace airman Martin “Easy” Julian (Nate Parker) and his black pilots back at base — leaving them with little to do but further hone their flying skills — while their white counterparts are shipped out to combat after a mere three months of training. Mistakenly deemed inferior and assigned only second-rate planes and missions, the pilots of Tuskegee have mastered the skies with ease but have not been granted the opportunity to truly spread their wings. Until now.

As the war in Europe continues to take its dire toll on Allied forces, Pentagon brass has no recourse but to reconsider these under-utilized pilots for combat duty. Just as the young Tuskegee men are on the brink of being shut down and shipped back home, Col. A.J. Bullard (Terrence Howard) awards them the ultimate chance to prove their mettle high above. Undaunted by the prospect of providing safe escort to bombers in broad daylight — a mission so dangerous that the RAF has refused it and the white fighter groups have sustained substantial losses — Easy’s pilots at last join the fiery aerial fray. Against all the odds, with something to prove and everything to lose, these intrepid young airmen take to the skies in a heroic endeavor to combat the enemy — and the discrimination that has kept them down for so long.

Star Trek’s New, Tougher Captain Kirk

This is how Chris Pine does Captain Kirk.  The new Star Trek movie from JJ Abrams isn’t due to hit theaters until May 8th, but at a preview screening at Austin’s Alamo Drafthouse, some fans and critics got an advance look.

Above is a brief clip of what they saw.  This clip shows us the brief first meeting between Captain James Tiberius Kirk (Chris Pine) and future Enterprise communications officer Uhura (Zoe Saldana) in a local bar.   “You’ve got a talented tongue,” Kirk tells Uhura, after finding out that her specialty is Xenolinguistics.  The flirtation between the two immediately brings to mind the historic kiss between the original Kirk (William Shatner) and Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) in the ’60’s.

The sexually charged banter between the two is cut short by the arrival of a burley bouncer and three companions, who inform Kirk that “there’s four of us and only one of you.”  To which the new, tougher, Kirk immediately and cockily responds, “So get some more guys.  And then it will be an even fight.”

As a longtime Star Trek fan, who’s had doubts about this film from the beginning, I find I’m actually looking forward to it.  The more I see, the more intriguing it gets.  Even if only from the standpoint of seeing how the actors’ portrayals of the legendary characters compare with the originals.

State of Play Starring Russell Crowe

In honor of Russell Crowe’ s birthday, I’m running the official State of Play trailer today!  Release of this terrific political thriller is April 17, only 10 days away.  In addition to Crowe, it stars Helen Mirren, Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Jason Bateman, and Jeff Daniels, and is directed by Kevin Macdonald.

Crowe has long been tops on my list of favorite actors.  No one can disappear into a role the way he can.  Look at some of his most famous portrayals–Jeffrey Wigand in 1999’s The Insider, General Maximus, Decimus Meridius in 2000’s Gladiator, John Nash in 2001’s A Beautiful Mind.  And, more recently, Ben Wade in 2007’s 3:10 To Yuma and Ed Hoffman in last year’s Body of Lies.  Look at his roles in some of these and, were it not for his name in the credits, you might not realize you were watching the same actor.

Happy Birthday, Russell!
